Colares Wine Region

The Colares wine region, located near Sintra, is one of Portugal’s oldest and smallest wine-producing areas, enjoying a classification for quality wines since 1908. Colares was a major wine region since the Middle Ages, dubbed the “Bordeaux of Portugal,” and it is famous for its ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines, a rarity in Europe.

The flagship grape is Ramisco, which is unique to Colares and produces robust, tannic red wines with cherry, cedar, and balsamic notes. These wines require long aging (minimum 18 months in wood, often longer, plus 6 months in bottle) to soften tannins and are known for their complexity and aging potential (10–50 years). Other varieties (produced in smaller quantities) include Malvasia de Colares, Arinto, Galego Dourado, Jampal, and Castelão.

Notable wineries which can be visited and offer wine tasting experiences include Adega Regional de Colares, Adega Viúva Gomes, Casal Santa Maria and Manzwine.
