Sintra: Colares
Colares is a village that lies between the Sintra mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, encompassing Europe’s westernmost point, Cabo da Roca. It includes places like Almoçageme, Azenhas do Mar, Praia das Maçãs, and others, known for their scenic coastal landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and historic sites.
Colares has a rich historical background, with evidence of human settlement predating Portugal’s formation. Roman inscriptions, such as one near the Maçãs River, indicate early occupation. The area is a renowned a wine region, one of Portugal’s oldest demarcated regions (established in 1908) and the westernmost still-wine-producing area in continental Europe. The Ramisco grape, exclusive to Colares, produces robust, tannic red wines aged over ten years, while Malvasia grapes yield fresh, mineral-driven white wines.
Colares is also a popular summer resort due to its beaches (Praia das Maçãs, Praia Grande, Adraga, and the small Azenhas do Mar beach), cliffs, and proximity to Sintra’s cultural sites like Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira.
