Birds and Dolphins await you!

The Sado Estuary Natural Reserve is one of Portugal’s most important nature reserves just 1 hour south of Lisbon. It is a biologically rich area of wetlands that are home to more than 250 avian species. It is the perfect spot for birdwatching!

You can also find a sizeable colony of dolphins in the River Sado who are known locally as “roazes-corvineiros” (gnawers of corvine fishing nets), because they gnaw at fishing nets and primarily eat corvina sea fish. In autumn and winter, the flamingos cover the estuary with a blanket of pink, whereas the while storks build their nests on the highest chimneys. The estuary is also a safe heaven for several threatened or rare species, such as the black bat and otter.

The best way to explore the Estuary and the Sado River is to hop on a boat on a private tour or simply by taking the ferry that connects Setubal and Troia. We guarantee you will catch sight of the friendly and playful dolphins! For a different viewpoint, a balloon trip is a great suggestion and an experience you will never forget. If you love nature you cannot miss the Sado Estuary.

Are you tempted to come and need a place to stay? Well, there is no better place than our Hedone property in Troia. Our modern, fully-equipped Townhouse is located in the exclusive Troia Resort and is the perfect base to explore the nature around it!
