Troia: A Biodiversity Hotspot

The Tróia Peninsula, located along the Sado River estuary, is a biodiversity hotspot renowned for its diverse ecosystems and rich natural heritage. With over 600 recorded species, the area encompasses a variety of habitats, including dunes, pine forests, wetlands, and estuarine environments.

More than 150 bird species have been recorded in the Tróia Peninsula, which makes it a significant site for birdwatching. The Caldeira lagoon and surrounding areas serve as vital habitats for various waterfowl, including sanderlings, bar-tailed godwits, herons, and mergansers. The Sado River estuary is home to a resident population of bottlenose dolphins, one of the few such communities in Europe. These dolphins rely on the estuary’s rich marine life, including seagrass meadows that act as nurseries for species like seahorses, cuttlefish, and clams.

Very few places in Portugal, and indeed Europe, offer the biodiversity of Tróia. It is a paradise for lovers of birds, marine life and nature!
