Óbidos Opera Festival
The 2024 edition of the widely anticipated Óbidos Opera Festival (FOO) will run from September 6th to 15th. It will open with Astor Piazzolla’s tango opera “María de Buenos Aires”, with a libretto by the Uruguayan-Argentine poet Horacio Ferrer. This theatrical/music show symbolizes, at the rhythm of the tango, the struggle, passion and resilience of women in Piazzolla’s vibrant Argentina. Directed by Daniel Schvetz, it features Ana Ester Neves (soprano soloist), Christian Luján (baritone soloist) and Guido Lisioli (recitante soloist), among others. Performances to take place on September 6th (9pm) and 8th (5 pm) in Óbidos’ Praça da Criatividade.
On September 7th , the Pátio do Convento de São Miguel, in Gaeiras, will host “O Último Canto – Camões e o Destino”, an opera by César Viana, which marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Portugal’s most celebrated poet, Luis de Camões. On September 14th , the Festival presents a gala tribute to Giacomo Puccini on the centenary of his death (1858-1924). Famous arias from operas such as La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly will be performed, as well as thrilling and recognizable melodies from Puccini’s masterpieces. The gala will take place in an open-air venue in Olhos d’Água, Olho Marinho, starting at 9pm.
