Óbidos – Portugal’s most charming small town

The medieval town of Óbidos is simply one of the most beautiful and charming places to visit in Portugal. Its well-preserved castle dates back from the Roman occupation of Portugal but its current layout is Moorish and the result of restorations and reconstructions from different Portuguese Kings starting in the 12th century. King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel, on their wedding day on 1282 and she must have been delighted at the gift! Around the castle there are a maze of streets and white houses that are a pleasure to stroll amongst through the narrow, cobblestone streets. Its several churches breath history and are fine examples of religious architecture. A landmark not to miss is the Óbidos City Museum where you will find the works of famous 17th century Portuguese painter Josefa de Óbidos, a woman ahead of her time.

Óbidos has received many national and international accolades, including being considered a UNESCO Creative City of Literature and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal for its medieval castle. Throughout the year a full programme of cultural and entertaining events includes the International Chocolate Festival, the Mediaeval Market and Christmas, the Baroque Classical Music Seasons and the Opera Festival, among others.
